I made this round silver glazed, stoneware wall plaque, after reading a hard-hitting, yet darkly humorous book called Women Talking by Miriam Toews. The author, who is known for having a light touch with the toughest of subjects. The book’s based on a true story about a Mennonite colony in Bolivia, an extremist closed community of people who are deeply religious and shun modern-day life.
This is a spiritual sculpture – fluid, and feminine, a matriarch to watch over and protect you. The figure at the top is like an angel but she also strongly reminds me of one of the female characters in the book. One with unwavering faith, even in the face of the worst things imaginable happening to the ones you love. The other shapes in the plaque are fluid and decorative.
