Given half a chance, this is my preferred method to cool down in the heat of summer – yes I know, what a privilege!
This is an autobiographical piece, how I used to lay by the swimming pool, one leg dipped in. My husband and I used to house-sit a beautiful villa for a friend up in millionaires row on the Costa Tropical, Southern Spain. We had the pleasure of maintaining our own private swimming pool for 5 years. We had amazing uninterrupted views over the Mediterranean sea, with exotic plants surrounding the pool area. We might have been the poorest people up on the Monte (as we used to call it) with our old banger of a car but we got to live there all year round when most people only got one or two weeks holiday. We experienced the kind of luxury that some people yearn for their whole lives.
I made a lot of art when I lived there, loads of horizons and beach scenes – responding to my environment. I had a great studio, it was really light, with bay windows and that vast view! I had time and space to develop my artwork – I created my first flamenco dancers there! I visited our friend there recently, his house is full of the original art that I left him.
