One warm summer evening my husband and I were lucky enough to be wandering romantically through the ancient back streets of Rome, after a lovely meal out. We came across an interesting shop window filled with antiques. I took a photo which got filed away with our other holiday snaps. On painting this piece, I started off with loose collage and wild unconsidered paint marks. Once I built up a few layers I sat back and studied the abstract marks. I immediately recognised the bust from the shop window and set about making the painting a portrait about her. I’m more than happy with the way this figurative art painting has turned out, she’s emotional, kind of smiling yet resilient with her tears.
