I did an exhibition with the artist Manuel Morego, who mixes children’s drawings with realism and I think his attitude has rubbed off on this painting, as I’m blending realism with abstraction. This cockerel lives in a good friends personal utopia, I have painted lots of her animals already. I’m a rooster in the Chinese horoscope, so I have a thing for these interesting creatures. I love hearing them and I love the way they ruffle their feathers and check you are watching! I started the painting with collage and loose mark making. I built up many layers of complimentary colours and dots, the style of which is a direct lift off from some of my watercolour paintings. By adding something representational amongst the abstractions for me is something I have been trying to do for years and this time I think I have finally succeeded.
